comics books and the old days…

When I was little, I would spend hours pouring over the pages of comic books. Brightly colored images and white speech bubbles… as a 6 year-old, I couldn’t really understand the stories a lot of the time, but the artwork didn’t need interpretation. Batman and his amazing cape, dark blues and spectacular roof lines… captivated me. Later, Star Wars kept me coming back every month to shell out the buck fifty to see fantastically drawn x-wing fighters and strange new planetscapes. google

I spend more time in the funny pages now than I do in the comic book pages… but what I really want to tell you, is that my friend Justin Leach has a new comic book out. It is the culmination of 30 years of well, dreams and hard work. I want to share it with you. I’ve reviewed the comic below and hope that you will go over to IndyPlanet and support Justin and his new (old) endeavor, The Majestic XII. Read on…

Just who is Jack Clayton? Where did Legend come from? Why did he give up his sworn duty to protect his country from intergalactic forces? What happened to his team of super-human beings chosen to not only protect our planet from alien attack, but to conceal the truth of the existence of such a threat?

These are the compelling questions that churn from the pages of Justin Leach’s Majestic XII. While the relationships between the characters in the Majestic Twelve, past and present, have yet to be established in full, one cannot escape the presence of a history yet to be revealed. The evidence of some former but fractured romance between Jack Clayton and Loren St. Johns remains to be told and hints to what may have happened are sprinkled in between the action. The new members of “the twelve” are a sordid bunch extracted from various prisons… so the question of their loyalties and motives are sure to be in many future plots.

Bright, detailed pages are loaded with action sequences and rich characters jump from the premier issue. This comic is packed with the potential for a long and intriguing chronicle of the efforts of Legend and his band of planetary fighters. The stage has been set.

Building on Squid Row… and a Review!

Well Team Squid did a little construction over the weekend. The archive got a little bigger. Here’s what’s going on. google

I started Squid Row over at Webcomics Nation back in 2007. I used a different file naming system back then, one that is very different than the one I use today here on SquidRowComics (happily using Comic Press)… Sooooo, I amassed over 500 toons over on the other site. Bringing them all over here isn’t exactly an easy task. It means going back into the recesses of old files, reading the toons, and renaming with appropriate titles & dates!

Okay, Squid Team member Judy stepped up and volunteered to take it on… she went back in and renamed the files… and Team member Nelson (Almighty webmaster) batch loaded them onto this site. This project will take some time to finish. So far, we’ve gone back to late December of 2008. In the meantime, the archive (starting with number 1) is still over on WebcomicsNation.

AND NOW! Squid Row has been reviewed by Luprand’s Webcomic Musings!

It is a rather well-researched (with linked examples) review. It’s got a few big words in it and it’s fun to read. …And if you look at his “About” page, you’ll see he has an edumacation. I give him kudos because he comes from Ohio, where they are pretty serious about cartoons (come on, Ohio State has a cartoon research library! no joke, people!) … and I have many family peeps in Ohio… including my Mah! (hi, mom!) Have you met anyone from Ohio? They are some of the nicest people in the world… (I AM NOT sucking up here… Mr. Luprand already wrote his article! … and the Ohio people ARE nice).

Is there such thing as an “octophile”? Well, there must be… I have noticed that since I’ve been paying more attention to the tentacled creatures, I’ve gotten to enjoy their squishy selves. Squids, too, mind you. They’re a bit less, social though.

As some of you might have noticed, the past couple a days, the comic size has been a bit super-sized. No, I didn’t MEAN for them to be all that big… I’ve been “experimenting” with some different size sizes. My intent was to make the images smaller and easier to load. It sorta back-fired on me… (picture a scene from the Nutty Professor or something). Crow, from Nicky510 suggested some things… and I screwed them up. (Crow, your advisements was good’uns!)

But all is well now! The problem is fixed (thank you for your comments and your patience) and from now on Squid Row will be easier to read on your ‘puters (hopefully)! (dern techno- lergical, fan-dangled whatcha-muh callits mussin’ wit my *&&%%…) Where’s Mouse?

My new buddy, Crow over at Nicky510 has given Squid Row a nod… his most recent blog touches on last sunday’s squid comic about visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium (seems like many of you have also visited MBA…) and he’s included some of his jelly pics. Have a look-see and enjoy his comic about Nicky Nickel and his family… Nicky is little kid with a big imagination that often gets him into trouble… especially with his brother, Lex. But don’t take my word, take a look for yourself! google

Name that Octopus! Ok… we’ve got a few more names to add…. Lord Henry Octobottom IV… and Hubert (Hugh) & Gordo… Okay… I think the list is rather complete… and the Octopus’ name shall be revealed in a toon next week. Keep a’reading.

Alternative Press Expo 2009

What a weekend… I am just now regaining my senses and coming back from a zombie-like state…

If you had a booth there, I think you know what I mean. It was Squid’s first comic event and two full days of presenting Squid Row to the masses exhausted me! It’s hard work talking to peoples… I mean, it’s like Rob Scheider in All That Jazz (minus the drugs… at least at my table!) “It’s SHOWTIME”….

Aside from all the coffee and sugar, and all the talking and chatting and would be convincing, I met some great people! Last Gasp Books held a pre-registration and APE opening party… it was a fine get-together with an open bar, tastey morsels, and loads of minglers…. the place itself, was amazing… with a room full off cultural oddities and artwork. I even go to meet Ron, or as I like to call him, “Mr. Last Gasp,” a fine, bearded fellow with a lovely open-ness about him. I am sorry I didn’t get a photo of/with him!

I met the fine folks of Lovesick Robot and My Cardboard Life… I enjoyed conversing with them at Last Gasp’s Party… Great bunch of peoples… “Phil” came all the way from England to be at A.P.E. I am pretty sure she came the farthest to be there.

Saturday the event went from 11am-7pm… so it was most exhausting… The Cartoon Art Museum had a doohickey gig, but the most we could do was get dinner at a place called Tryptic and then go back and crash at the hotel. Sunday was a bit better in sales, although the weekend in general was said to be “less brisk” than years past… dang recession.

I had a great time… “Team Squid” is now in full recovery and I must say that my lovelies, Judy and Nelson are the minions I couldn’t have done without! If you don’t have minions, I suggest you get some! J & N, you are the best!

Who doesn’t love fish, and fishy underwater environs? I suppose that it’s for the love of fish that people have aquariums… I had a nice tank as a kid… guppies are so exotic.

Here’s a few photos from my recent visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium… which I call the Cypress Bay Aquarium in the strip (as Randie lives in Cypress Bay).
